I heard he played in the Counterpoints in NEOhio. I saw that band .Don't know if Quine was still with them in 66/67. Very popular band for a few years.

Thanks, Laszlo... I guess I shouldn't claim that he didn't practice law given his stint at Simon and Schuster. I think the "urban myth" theory makes sense -- it certainly was passed along by his Akron relatives, and I doubt we would've remembered it that way without some unsolicited comment from Rob!

I knew Bob Quine as a nodding acquaintance back in the late 1970s-early 1980s CBGBs scene. Always found him to be a reserved, but kindly guy. But, very approachable.

However, Quine did briefly practice law, or, so he told me. He said he read Intellectual Property law as an low-level in-house attorney at Simon and Schuster publishing for a few years before he dropped out of the corporate scene and started blazing his way through the EV-LES music world of that vaunted time. He might have been bullshitting me, but, that's what I remember he said. Perhaps this is an urban myth that has been passed along by his own doing.

I last saw him in passing around 1984 at some local restaurant or watering hole. We did not speak, because I figured he would not remember me, so, I did not bother him.

He was a well-versed, inventive guitar player, at times quite unpredictable, but, always in control and on his game. Pretty blazing, but tasteful, thoughtful.

His passing was tragic and sad, but, he left the realm on his own terms, which is good.

Jody, it's an honor... I still have my vinyl copy of The Raybeats, "It's Only a Movie" (check out my post on surf guitar: "Surf's Up in Cleveland"). But I've never been able to find your recording with Rob, "Escape" (I tried to download it on one site and ended up getting hundreds of lame jokes texted to me from "laughaholics"). I love Rob's description of the first tune, Flagpole Jitters, which was "designed to be offensive to most people." Will definitely check out your facebook page.

Tim, I'm Jody Harris, one of Quine's friends - I met him in 1974 when we were both at the Strand in NY and we went on to make some music, loosely speaking. I am so proud that the Quine musical gene is not a sport. I miss him and Alice every day that I live. I spent many years basking in the irreplaceable glow. It's wonderful to read about him from the family perspective. I'm on Facebook -- I would love to be friends.

My greatest ambition is to see - or to put together - a comprehensive Quine compilation that does justice to his talents. Anyone who shares that aim, or has Quine demos, outtakes, recordings, please contact me!!

“Did Quine work at Jerry Ohlingers or Forbidden Planet…”
No, the only jobs I think he ever had in his life were the one at Cinemabelia and for awhile he wrote for for a law journal (he had gone to law school and passed the bar in at least two states but never practiced law, the job at the law journal was the only time he ever used his degree).

"Did Quine work at Jerry Ohlingers or Forbidden Planet..." Hound says he worked at the Cinemabelia bookstore in NYC. Not sure where else he worked. I know one of his childhood friends in Akron was a guy who eventually owned Swenson's, a carhop hamburger joint. But I don't think Rob worked anywhere in Akron, other than as guitarist for the Counterpoints (who packed them in at some Portage Lakes dive).

Definitely check out the Hound's post about Rob circa '69... Great stuff -- he was no slouch, even before the Voidoids.
